What To Consider Before Buying A Great Beard Trimmer?
There are some things to know before you buy the right trimmer for your needs. There are so many different types of beard trimmers on the market, from cordless to corded, and with many different length settings and attachments.
So to make it simple; when you are looking at the top rated beard trimmers you will have to consider these four things—
- Your beard length: Long, medium, short or stubble? Check what length settings each trimmer has!
- The purpose of the trimmer: For your beard only? For head shaving? Whole body?
- Features of the trimmer itself: Vacuum function? Pop-up nose and ear hair detailing?
- Cordless or Corded?
After you take these things into consideration, you are ready to view our beard trimmer reviews, which is a very tight list of the top 7 products of 2017. We have made a chart to help you easily compare and contrast these trimmers so that you can make the right choice for your needs.

Why The Wahl Slate 9864 Is The Best Trimmer
This is without a doubt the best battery powered beard trimmer that is currently on the market in 2017. This is a fairly new product that was released early 2015 and it was about time. It comes with the usual wide array of Wahl combs and attachments that are meant to cover every piece of hair on your body, and the design and durability are top notch. Factoring in everything, this is unanimously the top beard trimmer that money can buy.
Why? Lets compare the top 2 choices and you will see.
Firstly, the Panasonic ER-GB80-S beard clipper is actually our newest addition in 2016, and it is improved from the ER-GB40-S Milano, the lower model. It was the exact improvements that we were looking for because the Panasonic Milano is a great product, especially for the price. The Panasonic ER-GB80-S has 39 built in settings, three comb attachments, and a pop up detail trimmer. Just like the Wahl Slate, both these products are meant to be full body groomers that can trim or shave everything, everywhere on your body.
Performance wise, the Wahl Slate 9864 wins as the blades and motor were just so powerful together that they literally shredded the hairs like a hot knife through butter during our tests on all types of beards; short, long, thin and thick.
The blades do not tug at all on your beard when you oil them before each use. This is an important step that you should not forget because you will unfairly misjudge the quality of the trimmer when simply the issue is that you are not using the required blade oil.
The ER-GB80-S is a great product, and would have been absolutely flawless had it not been for a couple of minor issues. Firstly, the head was designed to be a bit wide. This could be a real issue for some people, and we are not sure why Panasonic made it that way.
The second issue is that if you have a thick beard, the hair may get stuck inside the blades and constrain the power of the trimmer. You need to constantly clean it and this can get tedious after a while.
Aside from that, the ER-GB80-S is a high quality beard trimmer that is well built and will not break down on you. All three attachments are durable and well built as well, and the blades are one of the strongest out there.
Overall, the Wahl 9864 Slate is the top trimmer because it is aesthetically crafted and holds more than its own weight in terms of power and durability, and actually over-performs when looking at the features and the usability combined. For starters, the Wahl Slate does not have built in length settings but rather uses several comb attachments that act as external length settings. This is just what Wahl has always done, and it works for them so why change it?
The hair guide combs on the Wahl 9864 Slate make it very easy to shave your head to whatever length you need.
Because of the powerful and innovative carbon and stainless steel blades, you will get such a smooth trim that parallels the one that only the most expensive corded trimmers provide.
Do you want to change things up and get a close shave instead? Or perhaps completely trim down your chest hair? No problem! The highly effective system-3 foil shaver attachment will shred down your hair to an electric razor-like closeness. This attachment actually impressed us a lot, but keep in mind that you need to be cleaning the clogged hairs to keep it working smoothly.
And lastly, both the rotary nose trimmer and detail trimmer are nice additions that help you trim down those nose hairs and other hard to cut places. This will make your cheek and jaw line perfectly straight to highlight whatever style you are going for as well.
If you are looking for a reliable, formidable, and well built whole body trimmer that you can trust for a long time – then this is the one for you.
The Philips Norelco Multigroom 7100 is also a great choice for a relatively inexpensive whole body trimmer, but it does a lack a few key things that the Wahl 9864 Slate and the Panasonic ER-GB80-S naturally have; for example more durability and significantly stronger blades.
Choose the Wahl 9864, grab yourself some clipper oil and don’t look back.
How We Grade The Top Rated Trimmers
All the products listed above are of very high quality and they all get the job done exceptionally well when compared to others on the market. The basis of selection and ultimately the overall rating each trimmer was evaluated has been determined by testing these and many others that didn’t make the list and grading them based on the following factors:
- Battery Power: How long do you need to charge the battery and how long does it last after charging? Also, does the battery run into problems in the future?
- Quality of Blades: This is perhaps the most important factor; the better and more potent the blades, the higher the grade. Some things we looked at include: How well do the blades cut stray hairs? How clean does it pass on the jaw and cheek line? Do the blades need oil to work well? Our beard trimmer reviews weigh the quality of the blades heavily.
- Ergonomic Shape: We want our trimmers to be comfortable and easy to hold, without slipping while we are in the shower for the waterproof ones! The usability of the product is always a key aspect when comparing the best from the worst.
- Usability: The usability is a very important factor and one that has many parts to it. For example, does the trimmer cut very close? Does it work well on hard to reach places like under the nose and around the jaw? Are the features working well on it? How easy is it to actually change the different attachments and do any issues arise? Is it fully washable? This is essentially an overall view of the products and how convenient, as well as how durable they are.
- Price: The price is an obvious one. You don’t want to pay too much for something that isn’t potent and worth the price, so that is why all the selections above are actually perfect in the ratio of price and effectiveness.
So now that you know how we tested and graded our products, let’s compare them and go over some of the flaws.
These are the “small things” that we found out while testing these trimmers and they are worth noting in order to help you narrow down your final choice.
Comparing The Beard Trimmers And Their Flaws
While were testing most of the beard trimmers, we noticed a trend of flaws that were present on most products. This could of been us just nitpicking, but it seemed like before the Wahl Slate 9864 and Panasonic ER-GB-80S came out, most trimmers had very apparent flaws that kept them from perfection. And that is what we will discuss here.
Starting with the Wahl products, the Wahl 9864 Slate is also our choice for the best beard trimmer for long beards because of the various combs that go up to 25mm. Essentially, if you have a medium to long beard that you are proud of, the Slate will do the best job in providing you with a precisely even trim.
However, where it lacks is for short beards that require a 4mm setting. The combs skip over the 4mm increment and it may be a problem for some people, however there is a simple trick that can solve this issue. Pop in your 3mm comb and simply shave downwards instead of upwards and you will get a 4mm trim.
Overall, it is the top product in the vast arsenal of Wahl beard trimmers and is incredibly durable because of how well it is built.
Next up is the lower model of the 9864, the Wahl 9854 Lithium Ion, and it is a very good beard trimmer for the price which actually makes it our top value choice. The combs it comes with are good enough for short, medium, and semi-long beards and you should have no problem getting enough power to trim your facial hair down.
You will probably notice that this is a loud trimmer when compared to the others, however this does not seem to be much of a big deal unless you are afraid of waking people up in the morning. Aside from that, we should also mention that it comes with a handy travel pouch that makes it conveniently portable, especially for traveling.
Moving on to the Philips Norelco products, we begin with perhaps the most peculiar trimmer we tested, the Philips Norelco BT9285 with it’s patented laser technology. While it does look really cool and can probably assist you in one way or another as a contractor, it does not have much of a use if any at all. Trying to position it in a way that would be very accurate is not possible because you are trimming upwards ( where the laser doesn’t aim so well ).
If you were trimming downwards ( where the laser is actually very accurate ), it would be a very ingenious feature but it does not really help you much except for the occasional detailing from it’s dual side or maybe even trying to get a rough estimate of your cheekline. You will simply find yourself never using the laser except when showing it off to your buddies.
Now that isn’t necessarily a flaw than a useless feature, however the click wheel that comes with it definitely is instead. It is pretty difficult to clean the click wheel if you have thick growth as the hairs get trapped inside. With that said we don’t really recommend it for anything other than stubble or short beards.
Speaking of which, the blades work fairly well for short beards, and the 0.2mm incremental length settings from 0.4-2mm make it a very attractive option as a go to stubble trimmer.
Next up is the very new Philips Norelco 7200 BT7215, which is actually the upgraded version of the Philips Norelco 7300 QT4070. For starters, Philips seems to have shifted to the more attractive design in the BT line, looking to fix flaws and perfect it. This unfortunately is not the perfect product, but it is a slight improvement from the 7300. They did away with the turbo button, but the new motor seems to be as strong as the 7300 with the turbo on.
The self sharpening blades are very well made and you should have no issue getting an even trim. The trim is actually very even and potent, making it our best beard trimmer for short beards. Another plus is that this upgraded version is very easy to clean, and the integrated vacuum is still decent at catching around 80% of the loose trimmings.
The one thing that we do dislike, which is evident in all the Philips Norelco products we reviewed here, are the plastic guards that come with it. The variety of choices are great, but we wish they could have been a bit more durable. Because they are made of plastic, they will obviously feel flimsy. With proper care however, you should not have any problems so keep that in mind when you are inserting and removing those guards.
By no means should you be pressuring them when popping them in and taking them out. This is about having the right technique, not about the power you put into it ( an important life lesson there! ).
And that is really it for the rest of the Philips Norelco trimmers. The plastic guide combs are the only real problem. Aside from that, you usually are getting a great value for the price, and that goes for all of them, including the marvelous full body QG3390 Multigroom 7100, which has no discernible flaws except for the flimsy combs and the fact that the blades could have been a bit sharper.
Lastly are the Panasonic beard trimmers, and they are quite exceptional in their own way. Firstly, the ER-GB40-S is another great value choice and is great on sensitive skin as you will read below. The only issue is the Ni-MH that takes far too long ( 15 hours ) to charge. A lot of people might find this to be quite an annoyance, but if you can get by it you are getting a very solid clipper that has full body capabilities.
If you are overwhelmed by all the information on this page and still unsure of which trimmer to choose, we still have you covered. We have made a recommendation chart awarding trimmers for what they are best at in order to assist you depending on what type of beard you have and what you value the most. Take into account that any of these products listed above can do a great job for most types of beards, however this is more of the specific strength that they have, in which they shine.
Can’t Decide Which Trimmer To Buy? Refer To This Chart!
|Beard Trimmer Nominations||Malegroomings Award Goes To|
|Best Value||Wahl 9854 Lithium Ion|
|For Short beards:||Philips Norelco BT7215|
|For Medium Beards:||Wahl Slate 9864|
|For Long Beards :||Remington MB4045B|
|Perfect stubble:||Philips Norelco BT9285|
|Whole body use:||Philips Norelco Multigroom 7100|
|Most length settings:||Panasonic ER-GB80-S|
|Overall Performance:||Wahl Slate 9864|
This chart is not the be all, end all for which trimmer you can get. For example, most of these trimmers are great for giving you that rugged stubble look, but the Remington MB4040 just happens to be ideal for it. Furthermore, while the Wahl 9864 might be the best beard clipper for long beards, all the other products except for the Norelco BT9285 work great for longer beards as well.
This is because of the ultra short length settings that the BT9285 comes with, as the highest one is only 7mm. Lastly, the choice is ultimately up to you, but we are sure that you will like any of these high quality products that we featured above.
The Best Choice For Sensitive Skin
When you have sensitive skin, there’s a chance that using a razor only leaves you feeling itchy and sporting a rash. Alternatively, you can try using a beard trimmer – they are a great way not just to groom your beard and mustache, but some of them can even get rid of facial hair completely.
If you are one of the unfortunate men that suffer from hyper sensitive skin, we strongly recommend that you choose the Panasonic Milano ER-GB40-S. After our tests, it has stood up as very conducive to this type of skin and it does a remarkable job of trimming without causing the menial bumps and reddening from occurring that some other clippers or razors would give you.
While it is no longer on our top list, it is still a great product and worthy of being a choice for those with sensitive skin. The reason it has been removed from the top 7 is because of the battery power and the atrocious length of time it takes to charge ( 15 hours for 50 minutes of use ).
Regardless, Panasonic boasts the Milano’s potent hypo-allergenic blades and they have every right to do so. One of our testers has super sensitive skin and every trimmer he used during testing caused at least some type of shaving bumps or burns, except the Panasonic Milano.
Feedback that we have received also suggests the same exact thing: If you have sensitive skin of any nature and are worried about acne or redness, than this is the perfect trimmer for you. The newly added Panasonic ER-GB80-S also has similar hypo-allergenic blades that minimize tugging, but it is more expensive and more powerful as well.
Of course, you also need to have a solid routine and proper technique while trimming your beard to be completely successful in avoiding any harm done to your skin, so just don’t forget that and rely solely on the product itself. In any case, all these other trimmers we have listed do just fine for sensitive skin as long as you do have a proper technique, however they might be a bit abrasive for people who are on the more extreme side of sensitive.
Concluding Thoughts About Beard Trimmers
Now you may have noticed that we featured mainly cordless trimmers in our top 7 list. This is because the corded ones are not so much better in terms of power than their cordless counter parts anymore. There once was a time where corded clippers were significantly better, but nowadays there are plenty of powerful cordless beard clippers that are portable and convenient, so we feature those because they are actually the best ones on the market.
We actually tested a few of the famous corded ones, like the Andis Excel 2 speed and the Wahl Peanut, but none of them proved to be anything special in terms of beard trimming except for the fact that they are more powerful than their cordless counterparts. They just don’t come with enough length settings without having to purchase external combs to facilitate the modern man.
Furthermore, as long as you learn how to properly trim a beard, you can get the same exact quality that a barber shop would give you except at the comfort of your own bathroom and with a cordless trimmer. And on top of that, you don’t have to pay a cent as you can do it yourself.
In closing, if you are looking for a close shave rather than just something to maintain the growth of your beard, a beard trimmer is not the right product for you. Instead, what you’re looking for is an electric shaver so check out our top electric shavers list if that is what you want to achieve. But anyway, the next time you’re looking for a quick way to groom your beard, you have to give one of these facial hair trimmers a try. We guarantee that you will be more than satisfied![LAST UPDATED: JANURY 2017]
