While many men’s negligence towards their skincare is astounding, some do go to great lengths to achieve and maintain a healthy, clear, and glowing skin. If you happen to stumble here, you’re probably one of the rare few who fall under the latter group of men, which is probably the reason you’re looking for ways to utilize the natural power of essential oils to invigorate your skin.
There are plenty of benefits of using essential oils for skincare, ranging from helping prevent a wide range of skin issues to adding a protective layer on your skin and keeping it hydrated. Needless to mention, they are great for the overall health of your skin, especially given they also don’t come with any of the harmful chemicals that the other products you use do.
So let’s dive in and discuss everything you need to know about using essential oils to take your skincare to the next level.
Making Your Own Skin Care Products With Essential Oils
Men, or at least some men who care about their skin, use a variety of products to take care of their everyday skincare needs. And to your surprise, the three most common skincare products that most men use – beard oil, skin moisturizer and an aftershave lotion – can all be made using essential oils ( as well as some other ingredients ).
Here’s a look at some of the most common men’s skincare products, and the essential oils that can be used to make them.
Beard oil: Career oils such as patchouli, jojoba, pomegranate, rosehip, hazelnut, hemp seed, Vitamin E, as well as sweet almond oil are all great options for making a beard oil that you will be proud of. These are also the primary ingredients when cycling through our best beard oils list.
Moisturizer: Depending on your skin type, a natural moisturizer made using lavender, spearmint and eucalyptus essential oils, among other natural ingredients, can keep your skin moisturized longer and make it smoother, without subjecting it to any harmful effects unless you’re allergic to any of the ingredients (which is probably very rare).
Aftershave lotion: Fancy a spicy scent without messing up the calmness of your skin? An aftershave lotion made using the combination of rosehip, sandalwood and chamomile essential oils is likely going to be right up your alley.
Of course, there are many more men’s skincare products that could accommodate essential oils, but we figured we would just focus on the 3 most common ones as most guys don’t bother with a whole lot of products anyway.
Recipe For a Powerful Aromatherapy Beard Oil
If you decide to go against buying a beard oil and want to make your own, you obviously need a specific recipe right?
Below is a great recipe that you can make yourself with a few ingredients that you`ll need to buy.
You will need the following ingredients:
- 2 oz jojoba oil (also known as Simmondsia chinensis)
- 4 drops of sandalwood essential oil
- 8 drops of cedarwood essential oil
- 6 drops of lemongrass essential oil
Simply mix these up properly and your beard oil will be ready in no time.
The lemongrass oil here, however, can be replaced with any other lemon-based essential oil if you would like, based on your preferences. As a precautionary note, you might want to keep in mind that some guys may be sensitive to one or more of these oils.
Finally, this is a very simple aromatherapy beard oil recipe. There are many more specific beard oil recipes out there that you can consider as well. You can add Vitamin E essential oil as well for more potency.
However, it would be a pretty good option for most guys all the same, and unless you have specific needs or have already been using beard oil made with essential oils and now looking for a change, this aromatherapy beard oil may not fail to please you.
Recipe For A Powerful Aromatherapy Men’s Moisturizer
First things first, the moisturizer that you will be learning to make here would be an ideal skincare option for not only your face, but also other parts of your body. While skin moisturizers seem to be getting increasingly popular among men, they are not exactly the type of products you would want to use if you truly care about the long-term health of your skin.
This natural skin moisturizer is made using essential oils, however, and it is going to be perfectly healthy for your skin, given it’s natural and contains essential oils that have been proven to both nourish and revitalize your skin. This also fits very well with your nightly skin care routine.
Here are the ingredients you will need:
- 10 drops of lavender essential oil
- 10 drops of spearmint essential oil
- 15 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
- 8 drops of sandalwood essential oil
Make a mixture of these 4 essential oils, and then mix it up with balm if you`d like. The spearmint essential oil is primarily going to function as the scent here, so feel free to increase or decrease its quantity based on how strong or mild you would like it to be.
Also, if you have sensitive skin, be sure to dilute the eucalyptus oil before applying it to the mix. If done right, you will notice your dull skin to be revitalized.
Recipe For Aftershave Lotion
Unlike the other two recipes discussed above, this one’s not based on aromatherapy. And that means that it’s going to be more work, but we are sure the end product will be worth it as well.
So here are the ingredients that will go into this recipe:
- 3 drops of chamomile essential oil
- 1 drop of sandalwood essential oil
- 20 drops of rosehip essential oil
- 1 drop of cypress essential oil
- 6 grams Avocado oil
- 10 grams almond oil
- 5 grams cocoa butter
- 4 grams shea butter
- 230 grams water (boiled as well as cooled)
Take all the ingredients except water and essential oils into a bowl. Put the water into a saucepan, and then place the bowl over it in a way that the base of the bowl doesn’t come in contact with it. The next step is to allow the water to simmer, which would cause the ingredients to melt.
Then put the ingredients into a jar, and use a stick blender to blend them. And while doing so, keep adding the cooled water slowly. Once the mixture turns thick as a whipped cream, you can add in the essential oils as well, and then stir the new mixture.
After a few minutes, your new, softening, soothing aftershave lotion will be ready for use.
Important: Remember, you should always do a patch test before committing to a product. You may have botched the recipe or it you may not react well to certain ingredients. If any rash or adverse effect occurs on your skin, immediately stop using the mixture.
