Best Straight Razor of 2017: Top 6 Choices For Traditional Shaving

A well groomed man is always welcome – and when you take the effort to groom your looks it definitely shows and people do notice. Now a well groomed man who shaves with a straight razor is even more idealized. If you are one who prefers the clean shaven look, you will need a good shave. Now you may be used to your typical disposable razor, but if you want to shave like a real man from the past, you should definitely look into one of the best straight razors.

But why choose a straight razor over any other razor? What is the point?

Aside from the fact that the traditional way of shaving was with the use of a straight razor, there are some other benefits that you will enjoy when you switch. Regular razors often leave your skin with itches and rashes and you don’t get the closest shave with them. Well in the case of straight razors, they give you the closest shave possible and do not leave your skin worse for wear (if you have the right technique of course). In fact, the first ever razor was a straight razor – accompanied by the mug and the shaving cream.

The regular razors that most men currently use came much later and they make the process of shaving very boring. And despite the technological advancement, it’s the straight razor that continues to give the best performance out there!

Is it any wonder that there is a trend starting of people who have been using these disposables and are now going back to the proverbial straight razor? No it really isn’t.

Straight razors vary according to the blade types, and it is the blade type that also guides its purpose and the maintenance that it requires.

For those of you who quickly want to see the top 6 list, here it is:

With that said, let’s move on to some important information before going into more detail on the top 6 list.

There Are 3 Types Of Straight Razor Blades

  • The round point blade—

these lack sharp edges and are therefore easier to use. But they do not give the best performance, however when you’re new at using the straight razor these are the best options.

  • The Square point blade –

this is sharper and gives a more precise shave. This is especially good if you’re using it for small concentrated areas.

  • The French or Oblique point blade –

this is more for smaller and more difficult regions like under the nose and chin. It has the same sharp end as the square point blade.

Now that you’re up-to-date on straight razor basics, it’s time to look into your best straight razor options. Keep in mind that these choices are for beginners to intermediate users, as that is who this guide is mainly aimed at. Expert straight razor shavers will already have their preferences in terms of razors and would not benefit much by this guide. However, most people ( including the experts ) will agree that these 5 razors below are indeed of the best in the business. There are definitely better straight razors out there, however they have colossal prices of $300+ and they are just not necessary for beginner to intermediate users. Price is always a factor that we use to grade products because we still want you to get a good deal and not lose an arm or leg to purchase something. With that in mind, we have used and tested all of these 6 razors for a total of 3 months per razor and these are the results we came up with.

Any of these six great straight razors can be your primary tool in getting the most exceptional shave you can possibly get out of any other mediums. The two that come with disposable blades are more for beginners that are just getting into this type of shaving. They are cheaper and more friendly so if you are not sure that you want to fully dedicate your time into straight razor shaving, than you should definitely pick one of those instead. You also do not need to buy a hone and strop for these types of razors so the total investment you need to make is very cheap. The only thing that you`d need is a cartridge of disposable blades.

The other 4 razors are the traditional and more high quality ones. Although they are not beginner friendly, you will come to enjoy the processes of honing and stropping after some time. It truly makes shaving feel like a hobby rather than something you just have to do every day. There will be an epiphany-like moment when you are applying that lather with the bristles of the brush onto your face, and you will truly appreciate the art that is traditional shaving ( we promise it will happen one day! ).
